The Sandpiper Hotel – Barbados

Duration 5 minutes 45 seconds

For our stay on the Island of Barbados, we spent the first part staying on the West coast at one of the most well known and pleasant hotels – The Sandpiper.

We talk to Karen Capaldi, daughter of Budge and Cynthia O’Hara, the family behind the Sandpiper and Coral Reef Hotel, who with her husband, Wayne, manage The Sandpiper.

The Sandpiper Hotel

The Sandpiper, and its sister hotel, The Coral Reef are owned and run by the O’Hara family who originally moved to Barbados way back in 1956 to manage the Coral Reef.

In time, the O’Hara family actually acquired the Coral Reef and have over the years expanded the facilities which are world class.

After a flight from Manchester in the UK we arrived at the Sandpiper and were shown to our suite of rooms only a few paces from the beach. Although it was night when we arrived, we could hear the calming sounds of the Caribbean Ocean.

The entrance to the Sandpiper Hotel Upon entering our rooms, we were greeted with a basket of fresh fruit. Whilst unpacking, a waiter delivered the Islands speciality to make us feel at home – rum punches!

The Sandpiper has 47 Rooms, One and Two Bedroom Suites and Tree Top Suites which are set in seven acres of beautifully landscaped gardens.   Bougainvillea hang from the terraces of the rooms and suites overlooking these peaceful gardens filled with orchid trees and mature swaying coconut trees.

“Harold’s Bar” is an informal beach bar located right by the calm Caribbean Sea.  Named after a special member of staff, who was recipient of the Caribbean Hotel Employee of the Year award for 2002, this bamboo fronted bar is a popular meeting place for guests.  Guests staying at the Sandpiper can enjoy the additional facilities at the Coral Reef Hotel just two minutes up the road, and these include Hightide Watersports where we did some of our diving.   Hightide, and most other dive operators will collect you from the hotel.

Filming in the grounds of the Sandpiper Hotel Each evening there are stunning sunsets in Barbados and you can relax with a drink on the Sandpiper’s terrace

The service here is second to none and very personal where staff are all very friendly and helpful.  This is not a large impersonal hotel set in one block with lifts that go to many floors.  All the rooms are layed out in the grounds and no-one is very far from the beach itself.

We wish to extend our thanks to the O’Hara family and staff at the Sandpiper for hosting us and accommodating our needs whilst filming.
